APPLIED UNDERWRITERS FORMS NORTH AMERICAN CASUALTY GROUP; ACQUIRES CONTINENTAL
NATIONAL INDEMNITY COMPANY
San Francisco, CA, January 30, 2006: Applied Underwriters, the

announced the formation of the North American Casualty Group, and the acquisition
of Continental National Insurance Company from CNA, in strategic moves that support
Applied’s already strong industry position in the Mid-West, the Northeast and other
important regions throughout the U.S. Applied Underwriters plans to rename the acquisition
Continental Indemnity.
"We’re bringing Continental Indemnity and California Insurance Company into our

throughout the country – especially in California, the Mid-West, the Northeast and
other key regions. These regions are where our businesses are growing rapidly to

small-to-medium sized businesses."
Applied’s insurance products include SolutionOne® and EquityComp™. SolutionOne is
a seamlessly integrated package delivering workers' comp insurance, a payroll processing
system, a risk reduction system, and employer extended coverages designed for companies
with a payroll between $100,000 and $5 million. EquityComp is a sophisticated risk
financing program that allows customers to craft a solution that satisfies their
particular appetite for risk and aimed at companies with premiums in excess of $150,000.
